How We Measure

We have no laboratory. Everything we publish is traced to a document that already exists. This page describes the four-step path a number takes before it appears on this site, and what we do when the path dead-ends.

The four steps

01

Find the declared spec

Every product page has a spec sheet or a technical data section. That is the primary source. If a page has no spec sheet, that absence is itself the finding — and we report it.

02

Check what the document claims

Published care labels, technical data sheets and warranty documents tell us how the maker expects the product to behave. We quote these directly and link them.

03

Look for independent measurement

Where a laboratory or a long-running review publication has measured the same property, we use it and cite it. Textile and lighting standards bodies publish some of this openly.

04

Mark what is still unverified

Anything we could not trace gets named as unverified in the page, not quietly dropped. A comparison table with a row that says "not stated" is more useful than one that guesses.

Where the numbers come from

01

Manufacturer spec sheets

The baseline. Face yarn, pile height, back width, knot density, GSM, fill type, stated light blocking.

02

Care and technical documents

Published washing instructions, shrinkage tolerances, abrasion ratings and warranty terms.

03

Independent lab measurement

Where a third party has measured the property under a stated method, we use their figure and name the method.

04

Owner reports

Long-term behaviour — shedding, pilling, fading — is only knowable after time. We summarise patterns from public owner reports and never present them as our own experience.

What we will not claim

We do not write that we tested something ourselves. There is no testing room in this office. Where an entry describes behaviour over time, that behaviour comes from published care documents and from patterns in public owner reports, and the page says which.

We do not publish star ratings we cannot trace. A review count is only useful if the source of that count is stated. Where we cannot find a traceable per-product rating, the page omits the rating entirely rather than estimating one.

We do not list a price as a list price. The figure shown is the price displayed at the time of checking, on the page linked. We do not claim it is a manufacturer's suggested retail price, because we have not verified that.

Commission does not decide

Some pages carry affiliate links, and a purchase through those links may pay us a commission. That commission does not enter any ranking, any comparison table, or any verdict on this site. The order of the picks is set by the specification and the stated limitation of each product. Where a product we rate highly is not available through a program we use, it still goes in the picks; where a product pays well but fails on the specification, it stays out.
